20 Great Questions to ask when shopping for Upholstery:

How can I tell if I am buying high quality upholstery?
1. Frame - The frame is what provides the support and longevity of a piece. It should be constructed of kiln-dried hardwoods and hardwood plywood that are treated to remove moisture, which ensures the strength of the frame and warp resistance. Ask about the thickness of the frame components - they should be at least 5/4" minimum and larger in greater stress areas. What about the legs? Are the legs screwed on as an after thought? Legs should be built into the frame as an integral part of the frame.

2. Joinery - Screws are not a good idea when it comes to frame construction. As time passes the sharp edges of screws wear away the wood causing movement in the frame and leg. Good joint construction means all joints should be double doweled and corner blocks should be used to maintain rigidity and prevent wobbling.

3. Suspension - The premium suspension system is an 8-way hand tied spring unit. This means that each spring is tied by a skilled artisan 8 different ways to its neighboring spring. This system provides premium seating comfort.

4. Cushions - Seat cushions should be made of a high resiliency foam core, or an inner-spring construction. These cores should be encased in a high quality fabric ticking which prevents fiber shifting and fabric slippage. The back cores should be constructed of a conjugated fiber that is blown in and channeled. This provides consistency, and maintains shape and support by preventing the fibers from settling to the very bottom of the core.

5. Manufacturers Warranty - Does the manufacturer stand behind the product? What type of warranty do they provide on the frame, the suspension system and the cushions?

Does a higher priced fabric mean it is better quality and more durable?

Purchasing a higher priced fabric does not guarantee that it is a better quality or more durable. For example, silks are typically one of the most expensive fabric types, but are also one of the most delicate. Multiple factors are involved in determining the cost of a fabric, including content (nylon, rayon, cotton, linen, etc.), thread count, complexity of design, and country of origin. Each of our fabric swatches is labeled with a cleaning code that shows the recommended way to clean your upholstery. Any experienced retailer or designer can assist in matching the type of fabric that is most conducive to your needs.

Can I get samples of your fabrics?

We want to ensure that you receive the highest level of personal service available because we believe that you deserve it. Working with a furniture professional who has been trained to help you select styles and fabrics to reflect your personal taste and which fit your home is very important.
